31. Luqman/Luqman, the Wise

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

31:01
a. Alif. Lam. Mim.

31:02
a. These are the Messages of the Book - The Divine Qur’an – full of Wisdom.

31:03
a. It is a source of Guidance and a Mercy for those who seek excellence in virtue.

31:04
a. Those who
- establish the Salat/Prayer, and
- pay out the Zakat/annual charity, and
- believe with certainty in the realm of the Hereafter.

31:05
a. It is they who are upon Guidance from their Rabb -The Lord, and
b. it is also they who are going to be the successful in the Hereafter.

31:06
a. And from among the people, there are some who engage in diverting talk over Allah’s Message
- misleading others from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and
- taking it in mockery as well.
b. Those - for them will be a humiliating punishment.

31:07
a. And whenever OUR Messages from The Qur’an are recited to such a person,
b. he turns away arrogantly, as if he had not heard them – almost as if there was deafness in his ears.
c. So give him the good news of a painful punishment.

31:08
a. As for those
- believe, and
- practice righteousness,

b. for them will be Gardens of Delight in Paradise -

31:09
a. living therein forever: never to leave, never to die.
b. This is Allah’s true Promise,
c. for HE is The Almighty, The Wise.

31:10
a. HE created the celestial realm without the support of any pillars that you can see,
b. and HE cast upon the earth firm mountains – as stabilizers - lest it should sway with you on it, and
c. HE scattered on it all types and kinds of living species and creatures.
d. And WE also send down water from the sky clouds, thus making all kind of vegetation
beneficial to your needs to grow on it in pairs.

31:11
a. This is the Miraculous Creation of Allah!
b. So show me what those entities that you ascribe to HIM in worship have ever created?
c. Nothing whatsoever!
d. Therefore, the wrongdoers are in clear straying.

31:12
a. And, indeed, WE endowed Luqman with wisdom,
b. so that he should always remain gratified to Allah; and
c. whoever remains gratified to HIM is in fact being grateful for one’s own good.
d. Whereas whoever is ungrateful to HIM - should also know that Allah is All-Sufficient,
Worthy of all Praise.

31:13
a. And, when Luqman said to his son while advising him:
b. ‘O My Dear Son!
c. Do not ascribe partners to Allah -
d. for ascribing partners to HIM is certainly a terrible injustice and blasphemy against HIM.

31:14
a. And, WE have enjoined upon every human being, both genders, to be respectful to his/their parents:
b. his mother bore him, weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and endured his suckling/weaning for two years.
c. So - O human being - be grateful to ME, and
d. be grateful to your mother/parents.
e. And remember that your ultimate return is to ME when you will be questioned about your attitude and behavior with parents.

31:15
a. However, if they - your parents - pursue you to ascribe partners to ME of which you have no knowledge and scriptural proof,
b. then - do not obey both or either of them.
c. Nevertheless, continue to treat them with kindness in terms of worldly considerations, and
d. follows the path of those who turn to ME in worship, reverence, and awe.
e. Then to ME is your ultimate return,

f. when I shall apprise you of what you had been doing - of good or evil, of motives and deeds, and call you to account.

31:16
a. And Luqman said:
b. ‘O My Dear Son!
c. Whether good or bad, even if the deed should have the insignificant weight of a grain of a mustard seed,
d. and even if it is hidden in a rock, or anywhere within the celestial realm or within the terrestrial world,
e. Allah will bring it out to light for its judgment and award.
f. Truly, Allah is All-Perceptive of the minutest dimensions of all things, All-Aware’ of their location.

31:17
a. ‘O My Dear Son!
- Establish the Salat/Prayer, and
- enjoin whatever is right, virtuous, and good in Allah’s Sight, and
- forbid and try to prevent whatever is obviously wrong, vice, and evil in Allah’s Sight, and
- bear patiently whatever befalls you.
b. Surely, these acts require great courage and resolve to fulfill.

31:18
a. And, do not turn your cheek/face from the people in contempt,
b. and do not walk on the earth arrogantly and with pride.
c. Indeed, Allah has no love for any arrogant and boastful.

31:19
a. And, be modest in your walking, and
b. keep your voice low while conversing.
c. In fact, the ugliest of all voices is the voice of donkeys.

31:20
a. Have you not considered how Allah has placed at your service - enabled you to derive benefit
-from whatever is within the celestial realm and whatever is within the terrestrial world?
b. And, HE has lavished on you HIS Blessings - both outwardly and inwardly.
c. And, yet of the people are some who argue about Allah’s existence without any knowledge or guidance or any enlightening Scripture.

31:21
a. And whenever they are told:
b. ‘Follow what Allah has sent down by way of The Qur’an.’
c. They respond:
d. ‘No!
e. We are going to follow only what we found our forefathers’ practicing.
f. But why should you follow your forefathers even though Satan had been leading them to the punishment of the Blazing Fire?

31:22
a. And the truth is that whoever inclines towards Allah submissively and seeks excellence in
too,

b. he has surely held fast to a handle most secure that would neither be severed nor weakened and would never let down anyone who holds on to it.
c. And the final outcome of all things rests with Allah.

31:23
a. O The Prophet!
b. And whoever disbelieves – then do not let his disbelief grieve you or upset you.
c. For their ultimate return is to be to US,
d. then WE will apprise them of what they had been doing and call them to account for it.
e. Indeed, Allah is Fully Aware of what is in the hearts: be it good, be it evil.

31:24
a. WE will give them enjoyment of the worldly life for a short while,
b. then, in the end, WE will drag them to a massive punishment.

31:25
a. And if you were to ask them:
b. ‘Who created the celestial realm and the terrestrial world without a precedent?’
c. They will surly answer:
d. ‘Allah!’
e. Say:
f. ‘All Praise and Gratitude be to Allah.’
g. Yet most of them do not understand it.

31:26
a. To Allah belongs whatever is within the celestial realm and the terrestrial world.
b. So no one other than HIM deserves to be worshiped.
c. Indeed, Allah is The All-Sufficient, The Worthy of all Praise.

31: 27
a. And even if every tree on earth were made into pen, and refilled with the whole seas and oceans as ink, with seven more seas and oceans yet caused to be added to it as ink,
b. the Words of Allah would not still be completed.
c. Indeed, Allah is The Almighty in HIS Sovereignty, and The All-Wise in HIS Command.

31:28
a. O The People!
b. Your creation and your resurrection is just like the creation and resurrection of one single person for HIM.
c. Indeed, Allah is The All-Listening, The All-Watching.

31:29
a. Do you not see that Allah causes the nighttime into the daytime, and causes the daytime into the nighttime?
b. And how has HE subjected the sun and the moon to your service, each fulfilling its own function for a specified term according to laws set by HIM?
c. And that Allah is Fully Aware of all that you do: your deeds, your motives.

31:30
a. That is so because Allah - HE is The Truth, and
b. the entities which they call upon apart from HIM are falsehood.
c. And, indeed, Allah is The Exalted, The Great.

31:31
a. Do you not see how the ships sail through the sea by the Grace of Allah, so that HE may show you some of HIS Great Wonders to reflect on and believe in HIS Almightiness?
b. Indeed, there are lessons in this for every steadfast and grateful person for appreciating HIS Grace.

31:32
a. In the face of all dangers, and particularly in a situation when waves/tides surround them like dark shadows of death, they cry onto Allah, devoting their faith in HIM alone.
b. But as soon as WE deliver them safely on to the land/shore, some of them waver between belief and disbelief.
c. Yet no one could deny OUR Messages in The Qur’an except deceitful betrayers.

31:33
a. O The People of the World!
b. Stay mindful of your Rabb - The Lord, and
c. fear the severity of The Time of Final Judgment when neither a parent could help his child, nor could a child help the parent.
d. Certainly, Allah’s Promise is true.
e. Therefore, do not let the comfort and adornment of the life of this world deceive you, and
f. do not let the deceiver deceive you about Allah by making you think that nothing will happen to you in the Hereafter.

31:34
a. Indeed Allah – with HIM is the knowledge of the coming of the Last Hour.
b. HE sends down the relieving rain at the time and place HE Knows, and
c. HE Knows what the pregnant mother’s wombs enfold,
d. whereas no person knows of what he will earn tomorrow, i.e., what the future will bring, and
e. no one knows in what place on earth he will die and get buried.
f. Undoubtedly, it is only Allah, WHO is The All-Knowing, The All-Aware of all these things and everyone.
