39. Al-Zumar/The Companions

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

39:01
a. The sending down of The Book - The Qur’an - with meticulous care has been arranged by Allah - The One and Only God.
b. The Almighty, The All-Wise.

39:02
a. Indeed, WE have sent down to you, O The Prophet, The Book with the purpose of making it a decisive authority.
b. So submit to Allah in awe and worship,
c. sincere in your Faith in HIM alone.

39:03
a. Indeed the True Faith is for Allah alone.
b. Yet those who take up other entities as their protectors instead of HIM, argue:
c. ‘We do not worship them except that they may bring us close to Allah.’
d. Allah will certainly judge between them concerning their differences.
e. For sure, Allah does not guide anyone who is a liar and is ungrateful/disbelieving.

39:04
a. If Allah had ever wanted to take a son to HIMSELF,
b. HE could have certainly chosen whoever HE Willed from those whom HE created.
c. Glory be to HIM!
d. HE is Allah, The One and Only, The Prevailing.

39:05
a. HE created the celestial realm and the terrestrial world for a purpose and without a precedent.
b. HE wraps the nighttime around the daytime, and
c. wraps the daytime around the nighttime.
d. HE made the sun and the moon subservient to HIS laws to serve you, each running on a
fixed course in their respective orbits for an appointed term set by HIM.
e. Indeed, HE is The Almighty, The Ever-Forgiving.

39:06
a. HE created all of you from a single soul, and
b. then HE made from it its mate, and

c. HE sent down for you eight kinds of the livestock, in pairs.
d. HE creates you in your mothers’ wombs in phases - one phase of creation following another
phase of creation, in three veils of darkness.
e. That is Allah, your Rabb - The Lord.
f. To HIM belongs the Sovereignty over all existence.
g. There is no entity of worship beside HIM.
h. So how, then, can you turn away from worshiping HIM to worshiping entities other than HIM?

39:07
a. If you disbelieve and turn away, then surely Allah does not need you.
b. Yet HE does not approve of the disbelief from HIS servants.
c. However, if you show gratitude by being a believer, HE will be pleased with it from you.
d. And no one bearing sinful burdens will bear the burden of any other.
e. Then to your Rabb - The Lord is your return, and
f. then HE is going to apprise you about what you had been doing in the worldly life.
g. For, indeed, HE is Fully Aware of what is in the people’s hearts.

39:08
a. And when hardship afflicts a person, he calls upon his Rabb - The Lord, turning to HIM for mercy and help.
b. But then, as soon as HE favors him with an act of grace from HIMSELF, he forgets that he had ever been calling upon HIM before, and sets up equals to Allah to mislead people from HIS Path.
c. Say to such people:
d. ‘Enjoy your disbelief for a little while.
e. Surely, you are going to be among People of the Fire!’

39:09
a. Can the one who submits to Allah in worship during hours of the nighttime, prostrating himself and standing in prayer, being mindful of the Hereafter, and hoping for the mercy of his Rabb - The Lord be like the one who disbelieves?
b. No!
c. Ask them:
d. ‘Can those who know the truth be equal to those who do not know?’
e. It is only those with understanding who will take heed.

39:10
a. Tell them that Allah thus speaks:
b. ‘O MY servants who believe!
c. Be mindful of your duty to your Rabb - The Lord!
d. As for those who do good in this world, there will be good reward.
e. And remember that Allah’s earth is spacious to migrate if your own place of habitat is hostile to your faith.
f. Those who patiently endure such situations will certainly be rewarded in full - without measure or delay.

39:11
a. Tell them:
b. ‘Indeed, I am commanded that I submit to Allah in awe, reverence, and worship sincerely
and exclusively for HIS Religion.’

39:12
a. ‘And I am also commanded that I should be the first and foremost among those who submit’
themselves to HIM in awe, reverence, and piety.

39:13
a. Say:
b. ‘In fact if I were ever to disobey my Rabb - The Lord, then I dread the punishment of a terrible Time – the Time of Final Judgment.’

39:14
a. Tell them clearly:
b. It is only ‘Allah to Whom I submit in awe, reverence, and worship -
c. sincere in my Faith in HIM alone.’

39:15
a. ‘So it is up to you to worship whatever else you wish instead of HIM.’
b. Then say:
c. ‘The losers will definitely be those who lose themselves and their families at the Time of
Resurrection.
d. Truly, that will be the most glaring loss!’

39:16
a. They will have coverings of the Fire above them and covering of the Fire beneath them.
b. That is how Allah makes HIS servants fearful of HIS disobedience.
c. ‘O MY Servants!
d. So be mindful of your duty to ME!

39:17
a. And for those who avoid the worship of false entities, and
b. turn in awe, reverence and worship to Allah alone -
c. for them is the good news.
d. So give the good news to such of MY servants of MY Mercy and Blessings.

39:18
a. MY servants are those who listen attentively to the Word of the Qur’an, and
b. thus follow and practice it in the best way possible.
c. These are the ones whom Allah has guided aright, and
d. it is they – they are the people with understanding and insight.

39:19
a. As for the one against whom Allah’s Word of Punishment has been justified -
b. will you – O The Prophet - then rescue the one who is thus destined to be in the Fire?

39:20
a. But as for those who remain ever mindful of their duty to Rabb - The Lord,
b. for them will be lofty mansions, one above the other, with rivers/streams running below in Paradise.
c. This is Allah’s Promise!
d. And Allah never breaks HIS Promise.

39:21
a. Do you not observe that Allah sends down rain water from the sky clouds,
b. then lets it penetrate the ground to form springs?

c. Then, through it, HE makes vegetation of varying tastes, forms, and colors to sprout,
d. then they grow until you see them yellowing pale,
e. then HE turns it all into dry chaff, stubble.
f. Indeed, in all this is a lesson for those with understanding and insight.

39:22
a. Just as HE causes the rainwater to descend to make vegetation sprout, HE bestows from high a light ……
b. Is the one whose heart Allah has opened to submit to Islam/HIM,
c. such that he follows a light/an enlightenment from his Rabb - The Lord equal to the one whose heart is closed to it?
d. So woe to those whose hearts are hardened against Remembrance of Allah.
e. They are clearly in error!

39:23
a. Allah has sent down for you the Glorious Discourse – The Qur’an,
b. this Book is perfectly consistent within itself,
c. even as it is repeating its Messages.
d. Those who stand in awe of their Rabb - The Lord shudder in their skins from understanding
it.
e. But then their skins and their hearts soften at the Remembrance of Allah with the promise of forgiveness and mercy.
f. This is the Guidance of Allah!
g. HE guides with it – The Qur’an - whoever is willing to be guided,
h. but no one can guide those whom Allah lets astray as those deserve to go astray.

39:24
a. So can the one who guards his face/himself against the evil of the punishment during the Time of Resurrection be like the one who is secure from it?
b. And it will be said to the unjust/evildoers:
c. ‘Taste now the fruit of what you used to earn!’

39:25
a. Those before them also denied and belied the Divine Revelations,
b. so the punishment came upon them from where they could not even perceive it.

39:26
a. Thus Allah made them taste disgrace in this worldly life,
b. though the punishment of the Hereafter is certainly far greater, if only they knew.

39:27
a. And, indeed, WE have set out in this Qur’an every sort of example/analogy for people, so that they may reflect and take heed.

39:28
a. This is an Arabic Qur’an - flawless and without any contradiction or crookedness,
b. so that they may guard themselves against disbelief and grow in righteousness.

39:29
a. To this end, Allah sets out an example/analogy of a person in the employment of many quarrelsome partners,
b. and another person employed by only one man.

c. Are they both equal in their likeness?
d. No!
e. The Praise and Gratitude is for Allah alone.
f. It is not that the reality is not clear –
g. instead, most of them do not even want to know.

39:30
a. It is a fact that you will die one day,
b. in as much as they too will definitely die someday.

39:31
a. Then, during the Time of Resurrection, you will be disputing with each other before your Rabb - The Lord.

39:32
a. Who, then, could be more wrong than the one who fabricates falsehood against Allah, and
denies and belies the Truth – The Qur’an - when it comes to him?
b. Should not in Hell be the place for such disbelievers?
c. Yes indeed, it should be!

39:33
a. And as for the one who comes with the Truth – The Qur’an, and confirms it,
b. they are the ones who are the Allah-reverent.

39:34
a. They are going to have whatever they wish with their Rabb - The Lord.
b. Such is the reward for the virtuous.

39:35
a. So that Allah may absolve them of the worst of their deeds and dealings in worldly life,
b. and reward them for the best of their worldly deeds and dealings - thus their good deeds and dealings are made to grow and become preponderant.

39:36
a. Is not Allah Sufficient for HIS servant?
b. Yes, indeed. HE is!
c. Yet they would frighten you with those entities that they worship apart from HIM.
d. And whoever Allah lets go astray - as he deserves to go astray – there can be no guide for him.

39:37
a. And whoever Allah guides aright – no one can misguide him.
b. Is not Allah The Almighty and Capable of Vengeance!?
c. Yes, indeed. HE is!

39:38
a. And, indeed, if you were to ask them:
b. ‘Who created the celestial realm and the terrestrial world?’
c. They will readily answer:
d. ‘Allah!’
e. Ask them:

f. ‘Have you, then, ever considered any rationale for what you call upon instead of Allah?
g. If Allah intended any harm for me, could they – entities that they worship – be able to
remove HIS harm from me?
h. Or, if HE intended some Mercy for me, could they be able to hold back HIS Mercy?’
i. Then say:
j. ‘Allah is Sufficient for me!
k. And all those who trust – believers - put their trust in HIM.

39:39
a. Say:
b. ‘O My People!
c. Do whatever you can to hinder me,
d. no matter what I am doing whatever I am assigned to do.
e. But soon you are going to know …..

39:40
a. …. upon whom the punishment will come, disgracing him, and
b. upon whom will descend the punishment, enduring.’

39:41
a. O The Prophet!
b. Indeed, WE have sent down to you The Book of the Qur’an for the benefit of all mankind in all
truth.
c. So whoever is guided by the Guidance of The Qur’an is guided for the good of himself.
d. While whoever strays away from it only astray against himself – to his detriment.
e. And you are not meant to be a guardian over them.

39:42
a. Allah takes away the peoples’ souls by assigning HIS angel of death at the time of their death, as well as the souls which do not die during their sleep.
b. Thus, HE withholds the souls of those for whom HE has decreed death, but sends back the other souls to their sleeping bodies to live till a specified time of life set by HIM.
c. Certainly in all such situations are signs for a people who reflect.

39:43
a. Or, despite all the evidence of HIS Almightiness, have they taken other intercessors instead of Allah?
b. Ask them:
c. Are you doing that ‘even though they neither have any power nor any intellect?’

39:44
a. Say:
b. The power to grant the right of intercession belongs to Allah altogether,
c. to HIM belongs the Sovereignty of the celestial realm and the terrestrial world.
d. Then to HIM you are going to be brought back.

39:45
a. And yet whenever they are reminded of the Unity of Allah, the hearts of those who do not believe in the realm of the Hereafter are filled with disgust,
b. but when other entities of their worship are mentioned instead of HIM, they get overjoyed.

39:46
a. Say:
b. ‘O Allah!
c. Creator of the celestial realm and the terrestrial world!
d. Knower of whatever is beyond human senses and whatever is visualized by human senses –
e. YOU will judge among YOUR servants in that which they differed.’

39:47
a. And even if those who have done wrong possessed everything on the earth, and twice the like of it with it, they would surely try to ransom themselves with it to escape themselves from the awful punishment at the Time of Final Judgment.
b. However, what they could have never expected will become apparent to them before Allah.

39:48
a. And the evil consequences of their deeds and dealings will become apparent to them, and
b. that which they used to mock and ridicule will besiege them.

39:49
a. Human behavior is strange.
b. Whenever a person is afflicted by hardship, he calls upon US for help.
c. But when WE salvage him and change it into a favor from US, he says:
d. ‘This success has been given to me only because of my own knowledge and skills.’
e. No! It is not his abilities.
f. Instead, this favor is only a trial.
g. But most of them do not understand it.

39:50
a. Those who lived before them said the same thing too,
b. yet all that they had earned did not benefit them -

39:51
a. so the evil consequences of what they had earned overwhelmed them.
b. Similarly as for those who do evil among these - they will suffer the evil consequences of what they had earned,
c. and they will never be able to escape OUR design of punishing them.

39:52
a. Do they still not realize that it is Allah WHO expands the provisions for whoever HE Wills
as a test, and withholds it for whoever HE Wills as a trial?
b. Indeed, in this are lessons for a people who believe.

39:53
a. Tell the people that Allah says so:
b. ‘O MY Servants!
c. Those of you who have committed excess against themselves -
d. do not lose hope of Allah’s Mercy.
e. Undoubtedly, Allah forgives sins – all of them.
f. Indeed, HE is Oft-Forgiving to all those who repent, and Ever-Merciful towards those who die repentant.

39:54
a. And turn to your Rabb - The Lord in repentance, and
b. submit to the true faith before the punishment overwhelms you,
c. for then you will not be helped.

39:55
a. And follow - The Qur’an - in the best way possible of what is being revealed on to you from your Rabb - The Lord,
b. before the punishment overwhelms you suddenly without even your realizing it,

39:56
a. – in case any person should say:
b. ‘I am doomed!
c. I remained unaware of my duty to Allah -
d. for certainly I was of those who mocked’ the Divine Message and the Messenger.

39:57
a. Or any person should say:
b. ‘If only Allah had guided me to true faith, I would definitely have been among the
righteous.’

39:58
a. Or any person should say, when facing the punishment that awaits him:
b. ‘If only I could have another chance to return to the world, I should definitely be among
those who sought perfection in piety.’

39:59
a. They would thus be rebuked:
b. ‘But no!
c. MY Messages and Messengers did come to you,
d. but you denied and belied them.
e. And you were scornful,
f. and you were definitely among the disbelievers.’

39:60
a. And during the Time of Resurrection/Judgment you are going to see those who fabricated falsehood against Allah by ascribing partners to HIM,
b. with their faces darkened.
c. Will these arrogant people not have a place in Hell?
d. Yes indeed!

39:61
a. But as for those who were righteous, Allah will deliver them to their place of triumph:
Paradise -
b. wherein neither any harm will ever touch them, nor will they ever grieve.

39:62
a. Allah is the Creator of everything, and
b. HE is the Guardian over everything.

39:63
a. To HIM belong the reins of the celestial realm and the terrestrial world.
b. And as for those who disbelieve Allah’s Revelations in The Qur’an, those - they are going to be the real losers in their Hereafter.

39:64
a. Say O The Prophet:
b. ‘O Ignorant People!
c. Do you ask me to worship entities that you worship instead of Allah?’

39:65
a. Even though it has been revealed on to you - as it was revealed on to those before you,
b. that if you ever ascribed partners to HIM, then all of your good deeds will be wasted, and,
c. thus, you will certainly be among the losers.

39:66
a. Therefore, submit in worship to Allah alone!
b. And be among the grateful to HIM.

39:67
a. And they - disbelievers - do not truly honor Allah as HE ought to be honored.
b. And such is HIS Absolute Power that the whole terrestrial world will be within HIS Grasp at the Time of Resurrection,
c. while the celestial realm will be folded up - brought together - in HIS Right Hand.
d. All Glory be to HIM!
e. HE is Exalted far above all that they ascribe to HIM.

39:68
a. And as the Time of Resurrection is to approach, the Trumpet will be sounded,
b. whereupon everyone in the celestial realm and the terrestrial world will be thunderstruck/
faint, except whoever Allah Wills to be spared.
c. Then the Trumpet will be sounded once again,
d. whereupon they will all rise up, standing and staring around.

39:69
a. And the world will shine with the Light of its Rabb - The Lord, and
b. the book of worldly deeds and dealings will be spread out for everyone,
c. and the Prophets will be brought in and the witnesses too.
d. And judgment will be passed among them equitably and with full justice, and
e. they will not be treated unjustly in any matter.

39:70
a. And every person - whether it be righteous or sinful - will be paid in full for what he had done - good for good, evil for evil.
b. And, HE is Best-Aware of all that they do.

39:71
a. And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups,
b. until when they have reached it, its gates will open,
c. and, its angel guard will ask them:

d. ‘Did the Messengers not come to you, from among you, conveying to you the Messages of your Rabb - The Lord, and warning you of this Time that you were to encounter?’
e. They will answer:
f. ‘Yes,’ indeed!
g. But the Word of Allah’s Punishment will have been justified against the disbelievers.

39:72
a. It will be said to them:
b. ‘Enter the gates of Hell – to remain therein forever.
c. And wretched is the dwelling place for the scornful and arrogant.’

39:73
a. And, on the other hand, those who remained dutiful to their Rabb - The Lord will be escorted in groups to the Paradise,
b. until when they have reached it, and its gates will open,
c. and its angel guard will say to them in a warm welcome:
d. ‘Peace be to you!
e. You have done well by living a life of purity,
f. so enter it - to remain therein forever.’

39:74
a. And they will say:
b. All ‘the Praise and Gratitude be to Allah, who has fulfilled HIS Promise of Paradise to us, and,
c. HE has made us inherit this land of bliss -
d. allowing us to live in the Paradise as we wish.
e. And how excellent is the reward for those who worked hard in the Service of HIS Cause
and fulfilled the requisites of faith!

39:75
a. And you are going to see the angels surrounding the Throne of Divine Almightiness from all around, from every side,
b. continuously Glorifying their Rabb - The Lord with praise.
c. And judgment will have been passed with justice and equity on all creatures who lived, died, and resurrected.
d. And, after the end of reckoning, it will be proclaimed by angelic forces and all in Paradise:
e. The Praise and Gratitude be to Allah, Rabb - The Lord of all existence.
