40. Ghaafir/The Forgiver

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

40:01
a. Ha. Mim.

40:02
a. The sending down of This Book - The Qur’an - is from Allah - The One and Only God of everyone and every thing.
b. Allah - The Almighty, All-Knowing.

40:03
a. Allah - The Forgiver of impieties and sinful trespasses, and
b. Allah - The Acceptor of remorse and repentance, yet
c. Allah - The Severe in punishment,
d. Allah - The Infinite in bounty.
e. There is no worshipful entity other than HIM.
f. To HIM is the ultimate return upon death/the Resurrection.

40:04
a. No one disputes Allah’s Messages - The Qur’an - except for those who intentionally
disbelieve.
b. So do not be dazzled by their prosperity in the land.

40:05
a. The people who came before them also belied the truth - like the People of Noah and after them from other groups and communities, and
b. every community plotted to seize its Messenger and render him dysfunctional, and
c. endeavored to refute the Truth with falsehood.
d. Bur it was I WHO seized them -
e. and see how awful was MY Punishment!

40:06
a. And likewise the Word of your Rabb - The Lord got justified against those who disbelieved, that
b. ‘They will be the People of the Fire!’

40:07
a. Those angels who bear The Divine Throne of Almightiness and all those angelic forces who are around it-
b. glorifying their Rabb - The Lord with praise,

c. and having faith in HIM, and
d. seeking forgiveness for those who believe on earth, saying:
e. O ‘Our Rabb - The Lord!
f. YOU encompass everything in YOUR Mercy and Knowledge,
g. so forgive those who turn to YOU in repentance and obedience and follow YOUR Path –
Islam,
h. and spare them the punishment of the Blazing Fire.’

40:08
a. O ‘Our Rabb - The Lord!
b. And admit them into the Gardens of Perpetual Bliss which YOU have promised them,
c. along with the righteous among their ascendants, and their spouses, and their descendants.
d. Indeed, YOU - YOU are The Almighty, The All-Wise.’

40:09
a. ‘And protect them from all sinful deeds and dealings.
b. So during the Time of Judgment, whoever YOU protect from the punishment for sinful deeds and dealings, YOU would have granted him mercy -
c. for that indeed will be the great success.’

40:10
a. But those who disbelieved will be told:
b. ‘Whenever you were called to the faith, you would always vehemently reject it,
c. then Allah’s contempt for you whenever you were called to faith was even greater at that time than your contempt for each other’ now in the Fire.

40:11
a. They will say:
b. O ‘Our Rabb - The Lord!
c. YOU have made us die twice, and YOU brought us to life twice.
d. Now we confess our sinful trespasses.
e. So is there any way out for us from this state and go back to the worldly life so that we can believe and practice righteousness?’

40:12
a. They will be told:
b. No!
c. ‘This is because whenever the call was made towards belief in Allah - The One, you
vehemently denied and belied it,
d. yet when other entities were ascribed to HIM, you would willingly believe in them.
e. Therefore, the judgment on your blasphemy and disbelief now rests only with Allah -
f. The Exalted, The Supreme.

40:13
a. It is HE WHO shows you people HIS Wonders in the universe as well as within yourselves
- as proofs of HIS Supreme Creative Power and Uniqueness, as also
b. HE sends down rain from the sky with which grows provisions for you.
c. Yet no one reflects except those who turn to HIM in reverence and awe.

40:14
a. So call upon Allah, devoting your faith sincerely to HIM alone,
b. even if the disbelievers may detest it.

40:15
a. It is Allah WHO is The Exalter of Ranks, the Possessor of The Throne of Almightiness.
b. HE confers the Spirit of HIS Command upon whoever HE Wills of HIS servants,
c. so as to warn people of the coming of the Time of Meeting with HIM.

40:16
a. The Time they will come out of their graves,
b. when nothing about them will be hidden from Allah.
c. HE will ask:
d. ‘To whom does belong the Absolute Sovereignty this Time?’
e. And when no one answers as nothing will be existing other than HIM, HE will say:
f. ‘To Allah!
g. The One and Only, The Irresistible!’

40:17
a. At that Time each person - whether sinful or righteous - will face the consequences of his deeds and dealings, and be paid back for what he earned.
b. No injustice will be done to anyone at that Time.
c. Indeed, Allah is Quick in settling accounts.

40:18
a. And warn them of the Approaching Time when their hearts will leap up to their throats, choking them - because of grief and distress due to the exasperation they feel inwardly.
b. The evil-doers will have neither a dependable friend nor an intercessor whose word will be heeded to save them.

40:19
a. HE is even Aware of the treachery of the eyes,
b. and, of whatever is hidden of their intensions within the hearts.

40:20
a. And Allah will judge with all fairness, equity, and justice,
b. while those entities whom they call upon apart from HIM will not have any power to judge.
c. For, indeed, it is only Allah -
d. HE is All-Listening, All-Watching.

40:21
a. Have they not traveled around the world and observed the fate of those communities who lived before them and were destroyed?
b. They were more powerful than them and more advanced in terms of building landmarks they left behind in the world.
c. And, yet Allah seized them for their sinful conduct, and
d. they had no one to defend them against the Wrath of Allah.

40:22
a. That fate befell them because when their Messengers would come to them with the clear evidences - they persistently and stubbornly denied.
b. Thus, Allah seized them with agonizing punishment,
c. for, surely, HE is Full of Strength, Severe in Punishment.

40:23
a. And, indeed, WE assigned Moses with OUR Signs/Miracles, and
b. a clear authority…...

40:24
a. to Pharaoh and Haman and Korah.
b. But they all called him:
c. ‘Magician.
d. Great liar!’

40:25
a. Then, when he came to them with the Truth from US that they could neither deny nor belie, they said:
b. ‘Kill the baby-sons of those who believe with him – Moses - and let their baby-females live
for use as social and domestic servants.
c. However, the plotting of the disbelievers can only be in vain.

40:26
a. And, Pharaoh said to his courtiers:
b. ‘Let me kill Moses, and let him call upon his Rabb - The Lord to stop me from killing him.
c. I am afraid he may either change your religion,
d. or spread chaos/anarchy in the Land of Egypt.

40:27
a. So Moses said:
b. ‘Indeed, I seek protection with my Rabb - The Lord and your Rabb - The Lord from every arrogant tyrant – like Pharaoh and Haman and Korah - who does not believe in the Time of Reckoning.’

40:28
a. And at that very time an anonymous believing person from among the People of Pharaoh, who had been hiding his faith, argued:
b. ‘Are you going to kill a person simply for saying:
c. My Rabb - The Lord is Allah.
d. And he has in fact come to you with clear signs/miracles from your Rabb - The Lord?
e. Now, if he is a liar, then his lying will rebound upon him,
f. but if he is truthful, then some of what he threatens you with will afflict you.
g. Indeed, Allah does not guide the outrageous and liars.’

40:29
a. The anonymous believer continued:
b. ‘O My Community People!
c. You reign over the Land of Egypt today.
d. But, then, who could help us against Allah’s Punishment if it were ever to afflict us?’
e. Pharaoh assured his people by saying:
f. ‘I am only pointing out to you what I can see, and I am only guiding you along the path of prudence.’

40:30
a. And thereupon the one who had secretly believed said:
b. ‘O My Community People!

c. Indeed, I fear for you the like of the time of disaster after disaster and destruction that befell the factions and communities who were united against the truth -

40:31
a. - like what befell the People of Noah and ‘Ad and Thamud and all those after them -
b. for Allah never intends any injustice to HIS servants.’

40:32
a. ‘O My Community People!
b. I truly fear for you coming of the Time of Calling when you will be crying out to each other,

40:33
a. - the Time when you will be turning your backs in vain and flee from Hell,
b. with no one to protect you from Allah’s Wrath.
c. While whoever Allah lets astray has no guide.’

40:34
a. And earlier – long before the times of Moses - Joseph also came to you with clear evidence,
b. but you continued to be in doubt about what he came to you with,
c. until when he passed away, you said:
d. ‘Allah will never assign any Messenger after him.’
e. This is how Allah lets astray every doubter and skeptic about HIS Messengers and Messages.

40:35
a. Those who dispute Allah’s Messages without receiving any authority that may support their stance -
b. that is very despicable in the Sight of Allah as well as in the sight of those who believe.
c. This is how Allah sets a seal on the heart of every arrogant tyrant.

40:36
a. And Pharaoh said:
b. ‘O Haman!
c. Build me a high tower so that I may gain means of access …….

40:37
a. …… access to reach up to the heavens to look upon Moses’ Allah -
b. though I am convinced that he is a liar.’
c. And, thus, Pharaoh’s evil deeds were made to appear alluring to him, and
d. he was diverted from the Right Path.
e. But the plotting of Pharaoh against Moses brought him nothing but ruin and loss.

40:38
a. And the one who believed said:
b. ‘O My Community People!
c. Follow me.
d. I will guide you along the path of prudence.’

40:39
a. ‘O My Community People!
b. This worldly life is only a temporary enjoyment,

c. whereas the Hereafter - is truly the Realm of Permanence:’
d. the everlasting, which shall never disappear.

40:40
a. ‘Whoever commits a sinful deed will not be paid back but with the like of it, whereas
b. whoever performs a deed of righteousness, whether a male or a female - and is a believer
- those will enter the Paradise,
c. wherein they will be provided for without measure.’

40:41
a. ‘O My Community People!
b. How odd it is that while I am inviting you to salvation, you are calling me to the Fire?’

40:42
a. ‘You are calling me to disbelieve in Allah, and to ascribe certain entities to HIM of which I have no knowledge,
b. whereas I am calling you to The Almighty, The Ever-Forgiving.’

40:43
a. ‘There is no doubt that to which you are calling me to worship is the one who has no say
either in this world or in the realm of the Hereafter.
b. Also there is no doubt that our ultimate return is going to be to Allah, and
c. those who go beyond limits – they will be People of the Fire.’

40:44
a. ‘You will definitely remember what I am telling you now is nothing but the truth.
b. And, I entrust my affairs to Allah.
c. Indeed, Allah is Ever-Observing HIS servants.’

40:45
a. So Allah saved him from the evils of their plotting to assassinate him,
b. while the People of Pharaoh were besieged by a terrible punishment.

40:46
a. The Fire - they will be exposed to it, morning and evening.
b. And at the Time when the Last Hour arrives, the angels will be commanded:
c. ‘Dump Pharaoh’s people to the most intense punishment’ of Hellfire.

40:47
a. And then they are going to dispute with one another in The Fire, and,
b. the meek will say to those who were arrogant and who oppressed them:
c. ‘Surely we used to follow you,
d. so can you now relieve us from some portion of the Fire?’

40:48
a. But those who were arrogant will respond:
b. ‘In reality we are all together in it: Hellfire,
c. Allah has already judged among HIS servants.’

40:49
a. And those in the Fire, they will cry out to the angelic keepers of the Hell:
b. ‘Call on your Rabb - The Lord to lighten the suffering from us just for one day.’

40:50
a. They will ask mockingly:
b. ‘Did your Messenger not come to you with Clear Message?’
c. Those in the Fire will say:
d. ‘Yes – they did!’
e. They will suggest:
f. ‘Call out then yourself as much as you like!
g. But the prayer of the disbelievers will only be in vain.’

40:51
a. Indeed, WE support OUR Messengers, and
b. those who believe during the worldly life as well as
c. during the Time when the witnesses will stand up to testify peoples’ responses to the Messengers’ Call.

40:52
a. The Time when the excuses of the wrongdoers for disbelieving will not help, and
b. they will instead be left with a curse, and
c. theirs will be an awful home in the Hell.

40:53
a. And, indeed, WE gave Moses the Guidance, and
b. thus, WE made the Descendants of Jacob inherit a Scripture -

40:54
a. - as a means of Guidance and Remembrance for those with intellect among them to contemplate and take heed.

40:55
a. O The Prophet!
b. So be patient!
c. Surely Allah’s Promise to support you and destroy your rivals shall be true.
d. And seek forgiveness for your oversights, and
e. glorify your Rabb - The Lord with praise by evening and by morning.

40:56
a. Surely, those who dispute Allah’s Messages - The Qur’an - without any reason or authority having come to them, there is nothing in their hearts except for an overweening self- exaltation, which they will never attain.
b. Therefore, seek Allah’s Protection from their evil.
c. Indeed, HE – HE is All-Listening to their sayings, All-Watching of their state.

40:57
a. The creation of the celestial realm and the terrestrial world is unprecedented and certainly
far greater than the creation of the human species.
b. Yet most people cannot understand this truth.

40:58
a. Just as the blind and the sighted are not equal,
b. and so are not those who believe and practice righteousness and those who practice evil.
c. Yet how little do you reflect on similitudes of The Qur’an!

40:59
a. Surely, the Last Hour is to come.
b. There is absolutely no doubt about it.
c. Yet most people do not believe in it.
40:60
a. And your Rabb - The Lord says:
b. ‘Call upon ME!
c. I will respond to you.
d. But those who are too proud to worship and call upon ME will enter Hell, disgraced and humiliated.
40:61
a. It is Allah WHO made for you the nighttime dark to rest in it, and the daytime bright enabling you to see and work in it.
b. Indeed, Allah is the source of every favor to the people as HE is Full of Bounty,
c. yet most people are not grateful for it.

40:62
a. Such is Allah, your Rabb - The Lord.
b. The Creator of everything - all existence.
c. There is no entity of worship except HIM.
d. So why and how could you be so deluded from the truth?

40:63
a. Likewise were those deluded who denied and belied Allah’s Messages before you.

40:64
a. It is Allah WHO made the earth a place for your habitation, and
b. the sky a canopy.
c. HE designed you in the wombs of your mothers and embedded in you specific qualities, and perfected your design,
d. and provided you with good sustenance of life.
e. Such is Allah, your Rabb - The Lord.
f. So Blessed be Allah, Rabb - The Lord of all existence.

40:65
a. HE is The Ever-Living.
b. There is no entity of worship except HIM.
c. So call upon HIM, sincere in your faith in HIM, saying:
d. ‘The Praise and Gratitude be to Allah, Rabb - The Lord of all existence!’

40:66
a. Say:
b. ‘I am forbidden from worshiping any of those entities you call upon instead of Allah,
c. now when Clear Revelations have come to me from my Rabb - The Lord in the form of The Qur’an.
d. And I am commanded to submit to Rabb - The Lord of all existence’ in worship, awe, and reverence.
40:67
a. It is HE – Allah - Who created you
- out of dust, then
- from a sperm, then

- from an embryo/clot of coagulated blood, then
- HE brings you out into the world as infants, then
- HE makes you grow so that you reach full strength and maturity, then
- you live long enough to become elderly –
- although some of you die earlier than this, and
- some of you may reach a predetermined term of life set by HIM.
b. All this HE ordains so that you may understand the truth about human development and its Creator and Nourisher – your Rabb, The Lord - and thus become believers.

40:68
a. It is HE WHO gives both life and death/takes life.
b. And, whenever HE decides to do something,
c. HE simply commands it:
d. ‘Be!’
e. And it comes to be.

40:69
a. Do you not observe those who dispute Allah’s Messages in The Qur’an -
b. how are they turning away from the Divine Truth?

40:70
a. They are the ones who deny and belie The Book of the Qur’an as well as those Scriptures,
which WE sent earlier with OUR Messengers.
b. They will soon know the consequences of their disbelief….

40:71
a. …. when they will have fetters around their necks and chains in their feet,
b. and they will be dragged ……

40:72
a. …. through the scalding muck,
b. only to be set aflame in the Fire.

40:73
a. Then they will be asked:
b. ‘Where are those entities you used to worship…

40:74
a. apart from Allah?’
b. They will say:
c. ‘They have all abandoned us.
d. Oh no!
e. In fact, we were never calling upon anyone before!’
f. This is how Allah lets the disbelievers astray.

40:75
a. And it will also be said to them:
b. ‘This punishment is because you exulted in arrogance on the earth without any right, and
c. also because you behaved with vanity –
d. committing acts of blasphemy and disobedience in abundance.

40:76
a. So enter the Gates of Hell, to remain therein forever - never to die, never to leave.
b. What a terrible home for the arrogant!

40:77
a. O The Prophet!
b. So be patient!
c. Indeed, Allah’s Promise to chastise them shall be true.
d. And whether WE show you in this world some of what WE promise them of the suffering,
e. or WE take your soul, without showing you, it does not matter, for in any case
f. they all are to be returned to US for questioning and payback.

40:78
a. O The Prophet!
b. And, indeed, WE assigned Messengers even before you.
c. Some of whom WE have already recounted to you in The Qur’an, and some WE have not recounted to you.
d. But it was not possible for any Messenger to display a miracle without Allah’s Authorization.
e. So when Allah’s Command comes for the punishment to be sent down on to the disbelievers,
judgment is always passed with fairness and justice,
f. and, it is then, the followers of falsehood become losers.

40:79
a. It is Allah WHO made the livestock for you,
b. so that you may ride some of them and some of them you eat of their meat.
40:80
a. And you have many other benefits in them as well,
b. and you may reach by traveling on them wherever you desire,
c. and you are carried upon them just as you are carried upon the ships at sea.

40:81
a. Thus HE always shows you HIS Wonders.
b. So which of Allah’s Wonders are you still going to deny?

40:82
a. Do they never travel about the world and observe the fate of those who lived and were destroyed before them?
b. They were more numerous than them, and
c. stronger in might, and
d. made more impressive landmarks on the land that they left behind as archaeological sites.
e. Yet whatever grandeur and material development they achieved was of no benefit to them
in the face of Allah’s Displeasure and Wrath.

40:83
a. So whenever their Messengers would come to them with Clear Messages, they would
arrogantly exult in the worldly knowledge they had.
b. And, in the end, what they used to mock, besieged them.

40:84
a. So when they saw the severity of OUR Wrath, they said:
b. ‘We now believe in Allah, HE is The One and The Only, and
c. we renounce whatever worshipful entities we ascribed to HIM!’

40:85
a. However, their belated belief could not benefit them as it had not come out of a genuine conviction, but only after they had seen the severity of OUR Wrath.
b. This has always been the Precedent of Allah in dealing with HIS servants for their arrogance and disobedience,
c. and so the disbelievers were then completely lost forever.
