54. Al-Qamar/The Moon

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

54:01
a. The Last Hour has drawn near,
b. and the moon has been split open.

54:02
a. But whenever they see a Sign, they turn away, and mock:
b. Just the ‘same old deception, continuing!’

54:03
a. And they belie it and follow their whims.
b. But every matter will reach its proper end - so they will know the truth.

54:04
a. Certainly enough of the narratives of the fate of the former disbelieving nations would have
already come in which there is deterrence,

54:05
a. narratives full of far reaching wisdom,
b. yet the warnings do not benefit them.

54:06
a. So turn away from them.
b. The Time is going to come when the Caller will call all people to a horrible event;

54:07
a. with their eyes humbled, they will emerge out of their graves as if they were swarms of locust, looking confused and bewildered,

54:08
a. scrambling in a stampede and rushing towards the Caller.
b. The disbelievers will say remorsefully:
c. ‘This is such a difficult time!’

54:09
a. Before them the People of Noah too had belied OUR Messages and Messenger,
b. and they belied OUR servant Noah, and alleged:

c. ‘He is insane!’
d. And he was rebuked and prevented from advocacy.

54:10
a. So he appealed to his Rabb - The Lord in utter helplessness:
b. ‘I have certainly been overpowered.
c. So help’ me!

54:11
a. Thereupon, WE came to his help and opened up the floodgates of the sky with water pouring down in torrents.

54:12
a. And made springs after spring to burst out of the earth.
b. Thus the waters of the sky and the earth joined together at a point already decreed.

54:13
a. But WE carried him along – Noah - on a vessel/the Ark made of wood planks and spikes
and bound with oakum.

54:14
a. It sailed right before OUR Eyes -
b. a reward for the one who had been long belied and long denied - Noah.

54:15
a. And, indeed, WE left this narrative behind as a lesson,
b. so is there anyone who will learn a lesson?

54:16
a. So how terrible was MY Punishment and the consequence of not heeding to MY repeated
Warnings!

54:17
a. And, certainly, WE have made it easy to learn lessons from The Qur’an.
b. So is there anyone to learn lesson?

54:18
a. The People of ‘Ad belied and denied MY Warnings and MY Messenger Hud.
b. So how terrible was MY Punishment and the consequence of not heeding to MY repeated
Warnings!

54:19
a. Indeed, WE let loose a raging windstorm against them,
b. on a day of non-stop calamity: full of continuous misery and misfortune.

54:20
a. Wrenching and throwing the people away as if they were stumps of palm trees, uprooted.

54:21
a. So how terrible was MY Punishment and the consequence of not heeding to MY repeated
Warnings!

54:22
a. And, certainly, WE have made it easy to learn lessons from The Qur’an:
b. So is there anyone to learn a lesson?

54:23
a. The People of Thamud belied and denied MY Messenger Saleh and Warnings too.

54:24
a. And they said:
b. ‘Shall we follow merely a human being - just like one of us?
c. If we did so we will definitely be in error/astray and raving mad.’

54:25
a. How come that ‘The Reminder has only been sent upon him – Saleh - of all the people
amongst us?
b. No! He is not a Prophet.
c. Instead, he is just a wicked liar!’

54:26
a. WE comforted Saleh by assuring:
b. ‘They will find out soon enough who is a wicked liar.

54:27
a. ‘WE will be sending them a she-camel as a test for them in response to their insistently demanding a miracle.
b. So watch them O Saleh, and
c. be patient’ to see their fate!

54:28
a. And tell them that the well-water is to be apportioned between the she-camel and them/
their livestock;
b. and every turn of drinking will be fixed for each.

54:29
a. They adhered to the agreed regime but eventually became impatient and decided to kill the she-camel.
b. So they called their companion to take action, and
c. he seized it and maimed and disabled her with his sword.

54:30
a. So how terrible was MY Punishment and the consequence of not heeding MY repeated
Warnings!

54:31
a. In fact WE let loose upon them just one single mighty blast, and they were like dried stubble.

54:32
a. And, certainly, WE have made it easy to learn lessons from The Qur’an.
b. So is there anyone to learn lesson?

54:33
a. The People of Lot also belied and denied MY repeated Warnings.

54:34
a. Whereupon WE let loose upon them a hail of brimstones,
b. they were all destroyed except for the one household of Lot, whom WE salvaged by daybreak,

54:35
a. as a Blessed Favor from US.
b. Thus do WE reward whoever is grateful to US by being obediently devout.

54:36
a. And, indeed, he had repeatedly warned them of OUR Seizure/Wrath, but they dismissed the warnings.

54:37
a. And they lusted and sought to seduce his guests – angels - away from him;
b. but WE blotted out their eyes - telling them:
c. ‘Now taste MY Punishment as the consequence of disregarding MY repeated Warnings.

54:38
a. And by the morning that followed, an abiding punishment struck them.

54:39
a. ‘So taste OUR Punishment and the consequence of disregarding MY repeated Warnings.’

54:40
a. ‘And, certainly, WE have made it easy to learn lessons from The Qur’an.
b. So is there anyone to learn’ lessons?

54:41
a. And, indeed, the repeated warnings also came to the People of Pharaoh through Moses and Aaron.

54:42
a. But they belied and denied each one of OUR Miraculous Wonders - all of it.
b. So WE seized them as only the Almighty and Mighty in Absolute Power can seize them.

54:43
a. Are disbelievers among you any better than those whom WE seized earlier for disobedience and arrogance?
b. Or do you have any exemption from OUR Punishment written somewhere in the ancient
Scriptures?

54:44
a. Or do they boast:
b. ‘We are a strong group capable of defending ourselves.
c. We shall all be victorious!’

54:45
a. No!
b. They will be routed,
c. and they will turn their backs and flee!

54:46
a. No!
b. Instead, the Last Hour is their appointed time,
c. and The Last Hour is going to be still harder and more bitter for them - far worse than their sufferings in this life!

54:47
a. The sinful are misguided and shall certainly be in the Fire.

54:48
a. The Time will come when they are going to be dragged upon their faces into the Fire, and they will be told:
b. ‘Taste the touch of the scorching fire!’

54:49
a. WE have, indeed, created everything of the universe in due measure and proportion.

54:50
a. And OUR Command to ordain something is nothing but one single Word:
b. ‘Be!’
c. And it is carried out as swiftly as the blink of the eye -
d. to completion with perfection.

54:51
a. And, indeed, WE have destroyed many communities like you in punishment for their arrogance and disobedience.
b. So is there anyone to learn lesson?

54:52
a. And everything they do/did is noted in their book of deeds and dealings,

54:53
a. and everything, small or great, is recorded in their book.

54:54
a. Indeed, the virtuous are going to be in lands of bliss with Gardens and rivers/streams,

54:55
a. in a position of honor -
b. in the presence of The Sovereign, Mighty in Absolute Power.
