58. Al-Mujadilah/The Pleading Woman

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

58:01
a. Allah has heard the woman who was pleading with you, concerning the issue of her husband, and was complaining to Allah.
b. And Allah was hearing the conversation between you.
c. For Allah is All-Listening, All-Watching.

58:02
a. Those among you who estrange their women/wives by declaring them to be as their mothers;
b. should know that they can never be made as their mothers, for their mothers are only those who gave birth to them.
c. Indeed, they utter what is highly contemptuous, baseless and false.
d. Yet, assuredly, Allah will be Pardoning, Forgiving to the one who repudiates by zihaar through an atonement.

58:03
a. Those of the husbands who thus estrange their women/wives, then they wish to retract what they had uttered, let them free a captive before any skin-to-skin cohabitation between them.
b. Thus you are being warned so that you will never utter such contemptuous words again.
c. And Allah is Well-Aware of what you do.

58:04
a. And whoever cannot find any captive to set free or does not have the means of doing so, then let him keep Fast for two consecutive months, without any interruption, before any skin-to-skin cohabitation between them.
b. And whoever is unable for reasons of ill health or old age, then let him feed sixty poor people.
c. All this is decreed so that you may believe in Allah, HIS Injunctions and HIS Messenger.
d. And these are the limits set by Allah.
e. And the disbelievers/disobedient - those who will not comply with these conditions – will have a painful punishment.

58:05
a. Those who oppose Allah and HIS Messenger in complying with these injunctions will be disgraced just as those before them were disgraced.

b. And WE have already sent down clear Injunctions, and for the disbelievers will be a disgraceful punishment.

58:06
a. The Time when Allah will resurrect them all from their graves to a new dimension of existence,
b. HE will, then, appraise them of what they had done.
c. Indeed, Allah has kept a record of it, while they would have forgotten it.
d. For sure, Allah is Witness over everything.

58:07
a. Have you not considered that Allah knows whatever is within the celestial realm and whatever is within the terrestrial world?
b. Never will there be any secret conversation among three persons where HE will not be the fourth of them,
c. nor among five where HE will not be the sixth of them,
d. nor between fewer than that or more, without HIM being with them wherever they may be.
e. Then, at the Time of Final Judgment, HE will appraise them of what they had been doing
in their worldly life and call them to account.
f. Surely, Allah is Fully Aware of everything.

58:08
a. Have you not noted those who were forbidden to conspire, but reverted after a while to what they had been forbidden from?
b. And they conspire evil, rebellion and disobedience of the Messenger.
c. Yet whenever these very people will come to you, they greet you with a greeting other than that which Allah greets you with.
d. And they say to one another in derision:
e. ‘Why does Allah not punish us for what we say if Muhammad is truly a Prophet?’
f. For sure HE will.
g. Hell will be sufficient for them, and therein they will burn.
h. What an awful and woeful destination!

58:09
a. O The Faithful!
b. When you converse in private, then you will not do so for sin, rebellion, and disobedience to The Messenger.
c. But converse in private only to promote righteousness and piety.
d. And remain mindful of Allah - in awe, reverence, and piety - before WHOM you all are going to be gathered and held to account.

58:10
a. Indeed, private conversations for intriguing and conspiring are instigated only from the Satan to cause harm to those who believe.
b. Yet he cannot harm them at all, except if Allah may Will it to be so.
c. And in Allah alone let the believers always put their trust.

58:11
a. O The Faithful!
b. As and when you are told to make room for others in the assemblies, then you make room
without grumbling - accommodate one another.

c. Allah will then make ample room for you out of HIS Grace.
d. And as and when you are told to get up and leave, then you get up and leave without grumbling.
e. Allah will raise to higher ranks in Paradise
- those among you who believe, and
- those who have been granted knowledge.
f. And Allah is Fully Aware of whatever you do.

58:12
a. O The Faithful!
b. Whenever you wish to confer with The Messenger in private, give out some voluntary alms
in the Name of Allah before you do so.
c. This will be better for you and purer as well.
d. However, if you are unable to do so for the reason of strained circumstances,
e. even then Allah will be Forgiving, Compassionate.

58:13
a. Would you be reluctant in giving out some voluntary alms before such consultation with The Prophet?
b. Then, if you cannot do so for the reason of strained circumstances, Allah will still pardon you;
c. but you will, at least,
- establish the Salat/Prayer, and
- pay out Zakat/annual charity, and
- obey Allah in pursuance of all of HIS Injunctions and, HIS Messenger in whatever directives he may give you.
d. Indeed, Allah is Fully Aware of whatever you do.

58:14
a. Have you not seen that those hypocrites who befriend a people with whom Allah is angry?
b. They are neither from you nor are you from them.
c. And they swear falsely and commit perjury, and knowingly so!

58:15
a. Allah has prepared for them a woeful punishment.
b. Evil indeed is what they do!

58:16
a. They use their oaths as a means of obstructing others from the Path of Allah.
b. Thus they will have a humiliating punishment.

58:17
a. Neither their riches nor their children will avail them anything from Allah’s punishment.
b. They will be the People of the Fire, and
c. they will remain therein forever: never to leave, never to die.

58:18
a. The Time is going to come when Allah will resurrect them all in a new dimension of existence and hold them to account,
b. they will, then, swear to HIM just as they swear to you, thinking that they also have some basis.
c. Indeed, they are the liars.

58:19
a. The Satan overpowered them, and thus made them forget the Remembrance of Allah.
b. They are the Party of Satan.
c. Indeed, it is the Party of Satan – they are the losers!

58:20
a. Surely, those who oppose Allah and HIS Messenger Muhammad – they will be among the most humiliated.

58:21
a. Allah has decreed:
b. ‘Indeed, I shall always prevail - both I and MY Messengers over the enemies.
c. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty.

58:22
a. You are never going to find any people who will believe in Allah and the Last Hour, and at the same time, lean in affection towards those who oppose Allah and HIS Messenger Muhammad,
b. even if they were their own fathers/parents, or their sons/children, or their brothers/siblings, or their other relations.
c. They are such that HE has engraved true and firm faith on their hearts, and strengthened them with a spirit of intellectual enlightenment and spiritual vigor from HIMSELF.
d. And HE will admit them to Gardens below which rivers/streams flow, wherein they will
remain forever – never to leave, never to die.
e. Allah will be pleased with them for their obedience of HIM, and they will be pleased with HIM for His graciousness and reward.
f. They are the Party of Allah.
Indeed, it is the Party of Allah - they will ultimately be successful in its struggle against every falsehood - the Party of Satan.
