60. Al-Mumtahanah/The Woman Tested

I/We start by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

60:01
a. O The Faithful!
b. Do not take MY enemies and your enemies as friends,
c. expressing affection for them while they disbelieve in the Truth - The Qur’an - which has come to you;
d. such has been their enmity that they drive out the Messenger and yourselves from your homes in Makkah just because you believe in Allah - The One and Only God, your Rabb
- The Lord –
e. do not make them friends if you truly emigrated in order to strive in MY Cause and seek
MY Pleasure,
f. and at the same time, you show them affection in secret accords -
g. whereas I Know very well whatever you hide and whatever you disclose.
h. And whoever among you does so has indeed strayed far away from the right way.

60:02
a. While on the other hand, should they encounter you in a battle-like situation and gain upper hand over you, they will treat you like bitter enemies,
b. and stretch out their hands as well as their tongues against you with malice,
c. and they would love to see you returning to disbelief as they are.

60:03
a. Remember that your relatives and your children would not be of any benefit to you during the Time of the Resurrection.
b. HE will separate you out.
c. And Allah is always Watching over whatever you do.

60:04
a. There has, indeed, been an excellent example set for you to emulate by Abraham and those with him like Lot, when they said to their people:
- ‘We disassociate ourselves from you and whatever you worship apart from Allah.
- We renounce you in your polytheism and consequently enmity and hostility has arisen between us and you to last until such a time as you believe in Allah, The One,’
b. except for Abraham’s saying to his father:
- ‘I will surely seek Allah’s forgiveness for you,
- even though I have no power to prevail with Allah’ for you.

Surah 60 * Al-Mumtahanah 647

c. Abraham, then made a plea:
- O ‘Our Rabb - The Lord!
- In YOU alone we trust, and
- to YOU alone we turn for mercy and guidance, and
- to YOU alone is our final destination.’

60:05
a. O ‘Our Rabb - The Lord!
b. Do not let us become an example of punishment at the hands of those who disbelieve,
c. and forgive us.
d. O Our Rabb - The Lord!
e. Surely, YOU - YOU are the All-Powerful, the All-Wise.’

60:06
a. Certainly, an illustrious example for you has been set by them – Abraham, Lot, and those with them – to follow for those of you who look forward with hope and awe to meeting with Allah and The Last Hour.
b. But whoever would turn away in viciousness and disbelief, will find Allah All-Sufficient
and The Praised.

60:07
a. It may well be that Allah will soon instill reconciliation and mutual affection between you and those of them you once were enemies.
b. For Allah is Powerful to do that -
c. and Allah is Forgiving as well as Infinitely Compassionate.

60:08
a. However, Allah does not forbid you for being good to and to deal equitably with those
disbelievers who
- did not fight against you because of your religion, and
- did not evict you from your homelands.
b. Surely, Allah loves those who act equitably.

60:09
a. But Allah only forbids you from befriending those who:
- fight against you because of your religion, and
- evict you out from your homelands, and
- incite and support others to evict you and send you into exile.
b. And whoever befriends them, those - they will be the wrongdoers.

60:10
a. O The Faithful!
b. As and when the believing females come over to you as emigrants/refugees in the Cause of Allah, cross-examine them -
c. though only Allah is Fully Aware of the truth of their faith.
d. Thus, once you have ascertained that they were true believers, then you will not send them back to the disbelievers;
e. they would neither be lawful wives for them, nor would they be lawful husbands for them.
f. And you will return the bridal-money that were paid by their former husbands,
g. and there will be no blame upon you to marry them, if you wish and so do they and you would have paid their bridal-money to them.

h. Likewise, you will not keep disbelieving women in marriage who may have become apostate, but ask for the return of the bridal-money you had paid,
i. just as the disbelieving men whose wives have come over to you after embracing Islam
have the right to ask back the bridal-money they had paid.
j. This is the Command of Allah.
k. HE decides between you fairly and equitably.
l. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

60:11
a. Yet if any of your wives should go over to the camp of the disbelievers as apostates and refuse to return the bridal-money, and afterwards you have your turn of victory over them to retrieve your dues,
b. then you will compensate with thus retrieved bridal-money those whose wives have gone- over, to the equivalent of what bridal-money they had paid.
c. And stay mindful of Allah in WHOM you believe truthfully and sincerely.

60:12
a. O The Prophet!
b. When the believing females who have newly professed Islam come to you seeking pledge
of allegiance with you, declaring that they will:
- never ascribe anything or anyone to Allah, and
- not steal, and
- not commit adultery, and
- not slay their infant children/daughters, and
- not falsely charge that they devise between their hands and their feet, and
- not disobey you in any rightful thing,
c. then accept their pledge of allegiance, and
d. seek Allah’s forgiveness for them.
e. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Infinitely Compassionate.

60:13
a. O The Faithful!
b. Do not take as friends those who have incurred Allah’s Wrath and punishment as faith and their friendship cannot coexist in the heart and soul of the Faithful,
c. for they - who want to befriend - have become despaired of receiving any reward in the Hereafter, just as despaired were the disbelievers now lying in their graves that they will not be resurrected to a new dimension of existence.
