74. Al-Muddaththir/The Enrobed

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

74:01
a. O Al-Muddaththir!
b. O The Enrobed - Muhammad!

74:02
a. Arise and invite people to profess Allah’s Unity and Uniqueness,
b. and warn against disobedience!

74:03
a. Proclaim the Greatness of your Rabb - The Lord,

74:04
a. and purify your garments,

74:05
a. and keep away from all paganism.

74:06
a. And do not extend a favor in expectation of return of a favor.

74:07
a. And be steadfast for the Cause of your Rabb - The Lord.

74:08
a. Finally, when the Trumpet – call of the Resurrection - will be sounded,

74:09
a. that vey time will, indeed, be a very Distressful Time,

74:10
a. it will not be easy for the disbelievers;
b. but it will be easy for the believers despite the intensity of its harshness and horrors.

74:11
a. So leave it to ME to decide what to do with the one whom I created alone,

74:12
a. and then I granted him ample means - abundant and continuous,

74:13
a. and sons to be by his side as a means of power,

74:14
a. and made everything in life comfortable for him,

74:15
a. still he would be greedy, wanting that I should give him more -
b. while mocking and ridiculing MY Messenger Muhammad.

74:16
a. By no means!
b. I shall not give him any more of that,
c. for he has been challenging OUR Messages.

74:17
a. I shall soon inflict on him a terrible hardship,

74:18
a. for, indeed, he thought viciously and plotted against the truth of OUR Messages and manoeuvred to sabotage the very purpose of it.

74:19
a. So may he perish/be accursed for how he plotted -

74:20
a. then, again, may he perish/be accursed for how he plotted.

74:21
a. Then he looked at the people around him.

74:22
a. Then he frowned and grimaced,

74:23
a. then he turned away in disdain to OUR Message and behaved arrogantly.

74:24
a. And said of OUR Messages:
b. ‘This is nothing except wilful deception of words and expressions of the same kind as have been happening in the past!’

74:25
a. …. nothing except the saying of Muhammad, a human being like us.

74:26
a. I shall soon hurl him in the Scorching Fire.

74:27
a. And what may enable you to perceive the Scorching Fire?

74:28
a. It would neither have pity on nor spare any criminal of his flesh or nerve,

74:29
a. scorching all human flesh/skin.

74:30
a. Over it are nineteen angelic guards.

74:31
a. And WE have not appointed anyone but angels as guards of the Fire/Hell,
b. and WE have not made their number – nineteen - except as a test for those who disbelieve,
c. so that those who had been given the former Scriptures and this number may understand,
d. and those who believe may increase in their belief,
e. and so that both, who have been given the former Scriptures and the believers, may not be in any doubt,
f. and so those who have a sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers may say:
g. ‘What could Allah mean by this parable?’
h. In this way, Allah lets go astray him that wills to go astray, and guides aright him that wills
to be guided.
i. And no one can comprehend the angelic forces of your Rabb - The Lord except HIMSELF,
j. and, all this is nothing but a reminder for humankind.

74:32
a. By no means!
b. By the moon,

74:33
a. and the night when it recedes,

74:34
a. and the morning when it is unveiled,

74:35
a. that indeed, it – the calamity of the doomsday is one of the endless and greatest calamities;

74:36
a. a warning to the humankind;

74:37
a. like to those of you who may wish to advance towards true faith and good,
b. or lag behind with lack of true faith and evil.

74:38
a. Fate of each person will be held in pledge to what he earned through faith, deeds and dealings,

74:39
a. except for the People of the Right hand side,

74:40
a. settled in Gardens of Paradise, inquiring

74:41
a. about the criminals and their predicament.

74:42
a. ‘What led you to be in the Scorching Fire?’

74:43
a. They will say:
b. ‘We were not among those who offered the Salat/Prayers,
c. and fulfilled our devotional obligations,

74:44
a. ‘and we did not feed the poor,

74:45
a. ‘and indulged in vain discourse with those who indulged in vain discourse,
b. – and in mocking the believers,

74:46
a. ‘and we kept denying the truth of coming of The Time of Judgment,

74:47
a. until the certainty of death came upon us.

74:48
a. So the intercession of any intercessor - who is entitled to intercede, and even if allowed to intercede - will not benefit them now.

74:49
a. So what is the matter with them,
b. turning away in aversion from The Reminder - The Qur’an,

74:50
a. as if they were frightened wild donkeys,

74:51
a. fleeing away in panic from a lion?

74:52
a. Instead, every one of them desires to be given a separate Divine Scripture like the Prophets -
b. and unrolled before his very eyes.

74:53
a. By no means!
b. In fact, they do not fear coming of the Hereafter and its Correlatives.

74:54
a. Never to be so!
b. Indeed, this is a Reminder.

74:55
a. So let anyone who would wish, take heed of it.

74:56
a. And, yet they will not believe in the Hereafter and its Correlatives unless Allah so Wills.
b. HE is Most Worthy to be feared, and
Most Worthy of granting forgiveness to those who repent with remorse and sincerity, revere unceasingly and act righteously.
