89. Al-Fajr/The Dawn

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

89:01
a. By the dawn.

89:02
a. And the ten sacred nights.

89:03
a. And the even - the pair - and the odd - alternative forms, the single - of all creation.

89:04
a. And the night as it moves on to give way to the morning.

89:05
a. Is there not sufficient proofs in this for a person of understanding to believe?

89:06
a. Have you not learned from history how did your Rabb - The Lord deal with the People of
‘Ad -

89:07
a. - of Iram,
b. known for their thriving construction industry and great columns?

89:08
a. The like of whom were never created in the lands in terms of their power of assault and strength?

89:09
a. And the People of Thamud - who carved out the rocks in the valley to make dwellings,

89:10
a. and Pharaoh, who exercised full power and might?

89:11
a. They all transgressed beyond bounds in their land,

734 Surah 89 * Al-Fajr

89:12
a. and promoted great social disorder, chaos and anarchy there.

89:13
a. Thus your Rabb - The Lord unleashed different kinds of punishments over them.

89:14
a. Truly your Rabb - The Lord lies in wait!

89:15
a. And as for the human being, whenever his Rabb - The Lord would test him by conferring on him prosperity,
b. he will boast:
c. Even ‘my Rabb - The Lord has honored/is Gracious to me.’

89:16
a. But whenever HE tests him by restraining his means of livelihood,
b. then he will complain and grumble:
c. Even ‘my Rabb - The Lord has humiliated me.’

89:17
a. Not indeed!
b. WE did not test him with wealth to honor him, nor did WE test him with impoverishment to make him despicable to US.
c. WE do so because you people would not be generous to the orphans despite your riches,

89:18
a. and you would not enjoin and motivate one another to feed and clothe the needy.

89:19
a. And, furthermore, you would devour the inheritance of others generally and especially of the orphans greedily with sweeping gulp,

89:20
a. and, on the top of this, you would love wealth passionately.

89:21
a. Not indeed!
b. When the earth will be shattering, shattering repeatedly,
c. until every structure has collapsed and turned into rubble.

89:22
a. And the Command of your Rabb - The Lord will arrive,
b. with the angels,
c. row upon row.

89:23
a. At that Time - when Hell will be brought nearer to those who deserve it to be near,
b. and human being will come to realize the consequences of his worldly greed for wealth and
selfish behavior,
c. but what good will that realization be to him then?

89:24
a. In deep regret he will say:
b. Oh, ‘would that I had sent forward some good deeds for this life too!’

89:25
a. At that Time, no one can punish as HE will punish,

89:26
a. and, likewise, no one can bind him in punishment as firmly as HE will bind.

89:27
a. As for some of the believers, it will be said:
b. ‘O the soul at peace!

89:28
a. ‘Return to your Rabb - The Lord!
b. Pleased with HIM and HIS reward for you,
c. pleasing’ to HIM be your performance as well.

89:29
a. ‘And enter now and be among MY special servants.’

89:30
a. ‘And enter now in MY Paradise!’
